I love football, particularly NFL. They are masterful at promoting themselves, their sport and their players/coaches. How many other sports do you spend the better part of a day watching who the teams draft from the college ranks??
Now that I've given you a bit of background, I have to say "What the....????" Our household bleeds blue and gold during the college football season. We are all diehard ND fans. And we love Brady Quinn. He's talented and cute - what more could you want?? :-) We couldn't wait to see where he'd land in the draft.
One thing was for certain - we did NOT want him going to a bad team (like the Raiders) where he'd get the stuffing knocked out of him and thus end his career early (like UK's Tim Couch who was beat to heck and back as the starting QB for the new Cleveland Browns franchise). So when he was passed over by the Browns (we're Browns fans since Modell screwed the city over and moved the original team to Baltimore - still HATE the Ravens) we were surprised but ok. We hoped he'd go to Miami.
And there he was, still available when Miami's pick came... and went... without Brady being taken. What the ?!?!?! We couldn't believe it. It was a match made in heaven or so we thought. My brother, a DIE hard Dolphins fan called me, ready to congratulate my guy becoming part of his team. And yet, for some strange reason, it didn't happen. He couldn't believe it. We couldn't believe it.
And so Brady sat, in the comfort and seclusion of the commissioner's private box (nice move, commish - I remember how painful it was to watch Matt Leinart last year when he was the last one there to be picked), getting passed over by great teams who didn't need a quarterback. For one brief moment we hoped Cincinnati would pick him as a backup for Carson. Didn't happen though, and I can't blame the Bengals who really needed help in the defensive department.
So finally the Browns work some "magic" and end up trading so that they can pick Quinn - at the 22nd spot. So finally he is picked, becomes a Brown (the team he loved growing up - ESPN showed a pic of him at age 4 dressed in a Browns jersey and helmet) and the pain is replaced by smiles.
Miami, what were you thinking??? I truly hope Ginn Jr. is able to help your team contend this season. Cleveland, congrats on a good pick. You now have 2 of the top 5 players from the draft on your team. Hopefully this will help you compete this year. You deserve it.
