Bringing back the memories...

The girls and I had a chance to visit the Detroit Zoo this week. As part of our wanderings we were able to take part in a cool zoo experience: feeding the giraffes. Just the thought of doing it brought back a great memory for me (probably not so great for my brother though).

When I was little (like 1st or 2nd grade) my family and I went to the Cincinnati Zoo. We fed the elephants peanuts and the giraffes giant marshmallows. (Back then it was ok to do, no one worried about special dietary needs like they do today.) And we visited the children's zoo section.

One of the parts of that was a small monkey who was perched on top of a pole. He had a little place where he could sit and watch the people and a little umbrella over his head to keep him cool/dry. My dad had my younger brother on his shoulder, my youngest brother was in the stroller being pushed by my mom and I was walking. The monkey reached down and grabbed my younger brother's hair. Apparently being on my dad's shoulders placed him at the right height for maximum hair pulling by this monkey.

My brother cried and screamed, my dad and mom tried to get the monkey to let go and a bit of mayhem ensued. Me? I cracked up - couldn't stop laughing in fact. My laughter got me in trouble, with my mom telling me that it wasn't funny because my brother was in pain.

To this day, I can't think of that story without smiling. My apologies to my wonderful brother and parents. :-D

What fun! I LOVE giraffes! We fed some in California last year. Totally awesome to be so close. You got some great shots! (equally important as the experience itself!)
