Finding Her Niche

A has never been a sport nut like C has. She played one year of soccer and was finished. She played one season of basketball and was finished. She liked gymnastics, but didn't take it seriously enough for lessons at the "big" gym and was too bored at the "little" gym.

But then she found Super Saturday, a program for gifted kids. Her first class was Musical Theatre. When she signed up she said she wouldn't be an actor, but would be a stage manager. But by then end of the 6 weeks, she was acting and singing in the final production... a few weeks later disappointed when she didn't get to do a solo at her school's talent show. (And for the record, the shirt she's wearing in the pic above is from the Broadway musical Wicked. She LOVED the show - yes, Dear Mom and I took her and C to see it last summer.)

Her only school activity last year was the choir. This year she's doing choir again. But now she's found more...
  • Band: A college professor now comes to school twice a week for band lessons. She's playing the flute, borrowed from my dear niece who played it for 6 years in the local high school program. She sometimes likes the challenge of it, other times not. This week she played her first true note, "F." She was thrilled!

  • Voice Lessons: I had a heads up that the school's music teacher might offer this, and when I mentioned it to A she got very excited and said immediately she wanted to do it. So the sign-ups began yesterday... and she is already signed up.

  • Drama Club: Something they started fundraising for last year at the Christmas Concert, the school is offering it this year. She wants to do it, but wasn't sure if she was able. She thought it was only for middle schoolers. So we'll see later today - but if she can she will.

So my wonderful daughter is finding her niche, the place where she enjoys challenge and learning. I'm really excited for her. A will still do Super Saturday, this time taking 2 classes each Saturday (musical theatre has already been requested again, and her teacher there already said if A wants to do it again she'll pick a different musical so it's not the same for her).

You can see the performer coming out in her with these pics from Disney.

Oh, and on a side note... C, my sport nut who is loving playing soccer for her local high school, has already signed up to play basketball... and is now a Student Advisory Council rep for her homeroom. She's very excited about it. I think it's cool she's trying something new not sport related. The students on the council plan activities for the school, including service projects, and make announcements. It's a great opportunity for her to grow in a new direction.

I'm truly proud of both my girls for trying new things this school year!
