Reason for the Season

I've already posted this on my MySpace and Facebook pages, but wanted to share it here with those who aren't on those fun (time-wasting) sites. :-)

Reason for the Season Current mood: contemplative

Next weekend begins our new liturgical year... and Advent - that time when we prepare our hearts for Christ. We challenged our youth to make room for Christ by getting rid of all the stuff they didn't need. And they answered the challenge by decluttering more than 100 pounds of stuff.

Now I challenge all who read this: put Christ first this Christmas. Instead of asking for gifts for yourself, ask that gifts be given to help others. Donate to St. Vincent de Paul so they can help others when their power is turned off. Donate to the Parish Kitchen or Hosea House so they can feed those who are hungry. Donate to Be Concerned and Brighton Center so they can provide Christmas for others.

There is more to life than getting the latest phone, computer, tv, dvd, clothes, etc. Like today's Scripture reminds us: we need to be aware of Christ's presence when it ISN'T in front of us: the woman struggling to raise her family, the father working 2 jobs to provide what little he can for his family, for those who are homeless, addicted, living paycheck to paycheck, those whose families are separated by disagreements, strife and stress.

I pray that each of you reading this has a blessed holiday season. I count you among my blessings each day.
